Alexander Volkov,
PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF UDMURTIA
Republic of Udmurtia is one of the most rapidly developing regions of the Russian Federation with a diversified economy. The leading sectors of the Republic’s economy include machine engineering, manufacture of basic metals and metal products, oil, and timber; meet and dairy farming are the leading sectors in agriculture.

In 2007, Udmurtia celebrated 200 years of the Izhevsk brand of firearms,
which is inseparable from the names of the founder of Izhevsk weapons plant
A.F. Deryabin and such outstanding firearms designers as M.T. Kalashnikov, E.F. Dragunov, and G.N. Nikonov. Today, Udmurtia manufactures a wide range of weapons, from Makarov automatic pistols to SAM systems and ballistic missiles.  The Republic’s considerable industrial potential enables it to manufacture a great number of world-class civilian goods.

Udmurtia has been playing an active part in implementing top-priority
national projects of Russian federation that had been initiated by the President
of the Russian Federation V.V. Putin and became a logical extension of, and a very important  addition to, the second Program for social and economical development of the Republic.

All of the above factors, along with the preparations for celebrating 450 years of the voluntary annexation of Udmurtia into Russia (which will be celebrated
in 2008), contribute to favorable changes in the economic and social conditions of the Republic and open possibilities for developing business and
attracting investments.
