The Washington Times:
Guide book for unveiling mystery of Russia, by Alicia P. Stern, January 28, 2005:
“The new publication is the first successful attempt at a thorough investigation into the imports, exports, natural resources, crops, climate, products, firms, industries, geography, infrastructure, demography, government structure, personalities, and law and tax systems in a region-by-region format for all of Russia's 89 regions.”
The New York Times:
A Labor of Love, by Melinda Ligos, February 22, 2005:
“Putting together the book, which was celebrated at a party on Thursday night at the World Bank in Washington, was a major logistical undertaking, Mr. Hennessey said. Council members made more than 7,000 telephone calls over more than a year seeking information, then commissioned an army of independent experts to verify the findings”.
The Moscow Times,
Investors Get a New Guide to the Regions, by Maria Levitov, February 20, 2004:
“A book that is being billed as the most comprehensive resource on investment in Russia's regions was presented in Washington on Thursday.
…With maps that have special symbols for "reindeer breeding" and "melons and gourds," the book is the brainchild of Boris Alekseyev and Veronika Krasheninnikova-Berger of the CTEC.
…The guide was completed in 18 months, thanks largely to strong support from both domestic and Western organizations. "The World Bank, the Department of Commerce and the U.S. National Association of Manufacturers were instrumental in pinpointing the kind of information foreign investors are interested in," Krasheninnikova-Berger said.
... "The Astrakhan region is said to be unique," writes its governor, Anatoly Guzhvin. "The points on the Earth's surface where the lotus thrives are said to be the planet's energy centers, its chakras." …
From letters of support:
H.E. Sergey Lavrov, Russia's Representative to the UN at the time of The Guide's publication, now Russia's Foreign Minister “… In the 21st century the United Nations cannot do its job alone and the Global Compact initiative sees business as an agent of positive change - as part of the solution. Therefore we support the CTEC initiative together with the Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs to introduce a comprehensive database "Russia: All 89 Regions Trade and Investment Guide" which would also contribute to the promotion of concrete projects in the fields of trade, economic and investment cooperation.”
Trevor Gunn, at the time Director of BISNIS, US Department of Commerce: "A volume such as Russia: All 89 Regions Trade and Investment Guide, which systematically and seriously discusses business potential in the regions of Russia, promises to be of great interest to US firms. It truly puts the focus squarely where US business attention should be - on the regions, as a complement to traditionally high interest in Moscow and St. Petersburg."
Lord Skidelsky, Member of Parliament, Professor of Political Economy, Warwick University; Chairman, Centre for Global Studies: “…Russia's difficulties in attracting foreign investment stem not from lack of investment opportunities but from poor, unreliable, and out-of-date information, some of it dating back to the bad old days of the early 1990s. By giving an accurate, up-to-date, picture of the Russian economy today, this trade and investment guide will open up Russia to massive investment tomorrow.”
From the Guide's addresses:
Sergey Mironov, Chairman of The Federation Council of the Russian Federation: “The authors and publishers of this Guide were motivated by a determination to meet the demand in domestic and overseas business circles for first-hand information on the economic, investment, and trade potential of Russia's regions, and the efforts of the regional authorities to create a legal and practical framework conducive to enhancing Russia's competitive position on the market for investment.”
James Wolfensohn, then President of The World Bank: “The catalogue, a clear, comprehensive, and incisive guide to the business conditions in each of Russia's regions, will help to provide prospective investors, both in Russia and abroad, with much of the basic information they will need to start investigating the opportunities available in Russia's regions.”
Arkady Volsky, President of The Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs (Employers): “The publication of Russia: All 89 Regions Trade and Investment Guide will help both the foreign and Russian business communities to get a better idea of Russia, its economic, resource, trade, and investment potential, as well as each region’s capacities to select the most attractive offers and projects. I am confident that the Trade and Investment Guide will help promote reforms in Russia, and strengthen and expand cooperation between Russia’s regions and the global community.”
Jerry Jasinowski, then President of The National Association of Manufacturers: “It is our hope and expectation that the Russia: All 89 Regions Trade and Investment Guide can play a very useful role in bringing our [NAM] members together with potential customers throughout Russia.”
The Guide's launch at The World Bank, February 19, 2004:
Blair Ruble, Director, Kennan Institute, Woodrow Wilson International Center: “..what has been pulled together is a remarkable collection that is comprehensive, is easy to use, and most importantly, I think the more you work with the data, you come away with a feeling that there is a great deal of integrity to the data and that's what really makes this a valuable tool, not just for someone who's involved in economic development or in investment, but really involved in social science research as well.”
James Collins, former Ambassador to the Russian Federation: “For most business people today, most institutions, most of the people who are trying to give and get counsel about the development of a commercial relationship with the Russian Federation, this [Guide] is now the essential place to begin and the book you have to have on your shelf.”
