Located in the northwestern part of Russia, the Novgorod Region enjoys a
most advantageous position between the two Russian megalopolises, Moscow and St. Petersburg. Principal traffic arteries linking these two cities pass through the Region’s territory, providing a benefit for those who act on the two most important markets of Russia, as well as in Belarus, Baltic States and Europe.
The Region has no highly marketable raw material resources, except its
forests. However, using the experience of developed countries, our favorable
geographical position and highly qualified workforce, we managed to secure high economic growth rate, create new jobs for people and establish export-oriented companies. The regional administration adheres to a consistent economic and investment policy, which has drawn attention of multiple foreign business players, enabling the Region to obtain international renown.
I hope the readers of this book (who include, I am sure, our potential
investors and trade partners) will be interested in the Novgorod Region. Our
industry has seen a steady growth of output during the last several years, in
certain years exceeding the then national average. Conditions have been established and are being constantly improved for involvement and mutually
beneficial placement of domestic and foreign capital investments; a strategic
task is being implemented to switch to intensive economy development with
advanced technologies widely used in production.
The Novgorod Region has a rich history. It is a treasury of cultural and historic
values. The Novgorod Republic had been an integral part of Europe long
before Peter the Great founded St. Petersburg, his “window to Europe”. Our land bridged West and East, playing a crucial role in the trade, economic, cultural and humanitarian relations of Europe and Russia.
In 2009, we are celebrating the 1150th anniversary of Veliky Novgorod known as the cradle of Russia as a sovereign state. There is much more to such an event than celebrations of nationwide importance. Our city was a sui generis outpost of the Hanseatic economic union of European cities during the Middle Ages. The Hanse steadily developed through about four centuries and served as a model pattern of a strong coalition whose participants subjected all their actions to the ideas of cooperation. The fundamental concepts of the Hanse absorb officials and business people again these days, transforming into specific projects of the European integration.
The Novgorod Region offers large opportunities for Russian and foreign
business people, especially due to the preparation to the Hanseatic Days, which will be held during the celebrations of the anniversary of our ancient city. We hope this event will draw the interest of Russian and foreign business people and give a new impetus to development of comprehensive business relations.
