Nikolai Merkushkin,
HEAD OF THE REPUBLIC OF MORDOVIA

The Republic of Mordovia is one of the republics of the Russian Federation.
People belonging to various ethnic groups and religious beliefs live and work
here in mutual respect. The Republic is named after its indigenous ethnos –
the Mordva, the largest ethnic group in Russia speaking the Uralic language family and one of the major ethnic groups in the Volga Region. The Gothic chronicler Jordan made the first historical mention of the Mordva in the sixth century A.D. The renowned Russian chronicler Nestor mentioned the Mordva in his Russian Chronicle of the twelfth century.
The present-day Mordovia is a region where both industry and agriculture are
developed. In the new economic conditions, the Republic supports development of machine engineering, food and beverages, and processing enterprises, while the production potential and technical potential of the agricultural sector are improving, too. The Republic exports electrical tools and machinery, railroad cars, rubber products, lighting fixtures, and mechanical devices to 55 countries including Kazakhstan, the UK, Belarus, Ukraine, Italy, etc.
The political situation in the Republic of Mordovia has remained stable
for several years now. The society enjoys peace, consent, and constructive
labor. The established legislative environment provides benefits for investors
and guarantees protection of their rights. As a result, the foreign investment in
Mordovia almost tripled within the last five years (from $13.7 million in 2001 to
$35.5 million in 2006). Foreign banks and companies are willing to invest in the Republic’s economy, while some of them, for example, the SUN InBev brewery, actively develop their own production in the Republic. Russian holdings such as Veda, Sibur, AFK Sistema, and a number of other major investors do business in our Republic. Enterprises based in the Republic also invest their own funds in the upgrade and development of their production facilities.
Mordovia is a hospitable land whose prosperity depends on close cooperation
with other peoples. Our doors and our hearts are always open to friends.
Come to Mordovia and see for yourselves!
