Alexander Mikhailov,
GOVERNOR OF THE KURSK REGION

I am pleased to have this opportunity to introduce the reader to the Kursk Region, often called the land of nightingales. Our Region has a rich and interesting history, closely connected with the history of our country. Whatever
ordeals befell people of the Kursk land, they were always honorably doing their
sacred duty, protecting and defending their land and increasing its glory by heroic fighting and heroic work.
Today, the Kursk Region has both a well-developed economy (which is focusing on industry and agriculture) and a fairly good ecology. Proximity to large industrial centers of Russia and Ukraine—as well as availability of railroads, highways, and an airport—make it possible for the Region to maintain active trade and increase the Region’s appeal for people starting efficient international projects or investment programs. The Kursk Region has abundant natural resources: iron ore, phosphorite, molding and glass-making sands, chalk, and mineral waters. Kursk chernozem soils are an accepted standard of soil fertility. Local farmers produce much more agricultural products than is needed to satisfy the Region’s own needs: a considerable part of locally-produced sugar, grain, and products of animal farming is sold outside of the Region. A diversified economy, skilled human resources, and availability of electric power help to create a favorable business climate.
The Region has passed and is now further improving a number of laws that
secure property rights and protect investments. This fact has been already noticed by serious investors (both Russian and foreign ones) who have invested considerable sums in agricultural and industrial enterprises and in joint ventures.
There is no doubt that such economy sectors as machine engineering, petrochemicals, construction, construction materials, food and beverages, and processing industry are of interest to potential investors.
I invite all business people who are interested in cooperation with us to visit
the Kursk land and see for themselves what a great place it is for finding new
business contacts.
