Kamchatka Region   £20
Mikhail Mashkovtsev,
GOVERNOR OF THE KAMCHATKA REGION
VII Far Eastern Federal District
For a long time, the Kamchatka Region was closed to the outside world. That
situation has changed, however, and now the Region is actively developing its
economic links. Our Region is certainly attractive for tourists, who now have
the opportunity to visit our unique and spectacularly beautiful peninsula, but also for Russian and foreign businesspeople, who have expressed interest in the Region’s energy, fisheries, transport, and timber sectors.

Kamchatka is a wonderful place. Its volcanoes, geysers, lakes, rivers, and forests cannot fail to impress. Our Region is rich in mineral resources, its seas are rich in fish and seafood, and its rivers are renowned spawning grounds for valuable species of salmon. Kamchatka is a land of contrast and unlimited opportunity.

Owing to Kamchatka’s geographical location, air and sea transport play
major roles in sustaining life on the peninsula.

Elizovo International Airport, 30 kilometers outside Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, can accept aircraft of any freight capacity. Reconstruction work was completed at the airport at the beginning of 2003. The result has been increased throughput capacity and added comfort for passengers.

The port of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, the northernmost year-round seaport
in the Far East, handles 99.9% of Kamchatka’s freight. The port services cargo
routes to many Pacific Rim destinations.

The Region is implementing a number of important economic development
projects, including the construction of a trunk gas pipeline from a gas
condensate field in the Sea of Okhotsk to Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky,  construction of the Mutnovsky geothermal power plant, as well as mini hydro
power station chain on the Tolmachevo Lake.

Other important projects are being conducted in the fisheries, forestry and
timber, mining and metals processing, and tourism sectors.

Investments are needed to accelerate the implementation of many of these
projects and facilitate cooperation with the Far East regions.

We will do everything in our power to ensure that investments in our Region provide good returns and that our Region maintains a favorable investment climate.
