Chukotsky Autonomous District  £20
GOVERNMENT OF THE CHUKOTSKY AUTONOMOUS
DISTRICT
VII Far Eastern Federal District
The Chukchi land is the northeastern jut of Eurasia. Russia was aware
of the geopolitical significance of the peninsula that looked on Alaska
across the Bering Strait as long ago as in the 18th century: the
power that would take Cape Dezhnev would control the passage from the Pacific
Ocean to the Arctic Ocean.
Nonetheless in the 19th century local hunters still preferred to bargain with
Russian merchants in English, as the territory was in the zone of natural attraction
of America. Compelling the “belligerent Chukchi” to swear allegiance to the
empire cost it great efforts.
Being the northeastern outpost of Russia, the Chukchi land, beside its geopolitical
significance, has a large development potential. Today the District is developing
actively, maintaining economic and cultural links relations with neighboring
regions and Arctic nations. Cherishing its unique culture and archaic
traditions, the land of the Chukchi, Eskimo, Koryak, Yukagir and other peoples
looks forward into the future.
