Russia: All Regions Trade and Investment Guide - a Project of the Council for Trade and Economic Cooperation (Russia - USA).
Yevgeny Savchenko,
GOVERNOR OF THE BELGOROD REGION,
CHAIR OF THE GOVERNMENT OF THE BELGOROD REGION

The Belgorod Region is endowed with well-developed industrial and agricultural sectors and abundant natural resources. The Region accounts for
some 80% of the iron ore reserves of the Kursk Magnetic Anomaly, or more
than 40% of Russia’s total reserves of iron ore.
Mining, metals, and the agroindustrial sector are the flagships of the Region’s
economy. The Region extracts one third of Russia’s iron ore and produces
35% of iron ore pellets. The regional industrial output includes top grade steel
and some 4% of rolled metal. Manufacture of food products and beverages, cement, machinery, electrical machinery and apparatus, construction materials, and chemicals is developed in the Region.
The Region’s advantageous location near the national border of Russia contributes to intensive development of economic relations with foreign businesses
.
The pursuit of a policy of establishing vertically integrated agricultural enterprises and attracting major investors has made the Belgorod Region an acknowledged leader in per capita output of livestock and tillage products and
exports to other regions. It produces between 5% and 13% of Russia’s meat, vegetable oil, and sugar output, 2.1% of grain, 2.7% of eggs, and 1.7% of milk.
As of late 2006, the Belgorod Region’s ranked fourth in Russia in terms of
newly-built residential housing per 1,000 people, exceeding the national average 1.8-fold. Apart from residential and industrial construction, the Region is implementing important social welfare programs involving extensive construction of social and cultural facilities and new premises for educational, public health and cultural institutions. The Region successfully implements top priority national projects. Multiple social welfare programs aiming to raise its people’s life standards are underway in the Belgorod Region.
The Region continually ranks within the top ten most dynamically developing
regions of the Russian Federation. The active investment policy pursued by
the regional Government, favorable economic and social climate of the Region, its high natural resource potential, technology potential, and intellectual potential contribute to the Belgorod Region’s investment appeal confirmed several times by independent rating agencies.
