ADMINISTRATION OF THE ARKHANGELSK REGION
Arkhangelsk Region   £20
II North-Western Federal District
The Arkhangelsk Region is one of the largest regions in Russia. Its size is impressive – the Region covers over 587,000 square kilometers. From the north, it is washed by the White Sea, the Barents Sea, and the Kara Sea. The Arkhangelsk commercial seaport is the oldest port in Russia.

The modern image of this maritime territory has been a combination of advantageous geopolitical location and vast natural resources, research potential and high technologies, modern production facilities, growing transportation network, and a favorable business climate.

The spaceport in Plesetsk and the Center for Nuclear Shipbuilding in Severodvinsk are becoming more and more important for Russia, year after year.

The social and economic indexes for the last years show dynamic growth. There has been increase in the gross regional product, industrial output, investment, both foreign and domestic trade, the services sector; the unemployment level is dropping.

The Region’s stable economic growth enables it to implement large-scale economic and social programs, supporting high-tech industries as well as production and social infrastructure.

The near-term plans include the completion of the Nyuksenitsa –Arkhangelsk
gas pipeline, expansion of advanced timber processing facilities, implementation of new energy-saving and environmental technologies, further development of transportation network, shipbuilding, machine engineering, geologic exploration, mining and processing of diamonds, bauxite and other minerals, and development of Arctic offshore deposits.

The Dvina Land gave the world Mikhail Vasilyevich Lomonosov, a great Russian scientist. His 300th anniversary will be celebrated in 2011. The President of the Russian Federation has signed a Decree On the Celebration of the 300th anniversary of Mikhail Vasilyevich Lomonosov; an appropriate decree of the Government has also been signed. We have already begun preparations for this coming event and we hope this anniversary would give a great momentum to investment activities in the Region, with the research and education sectors as priority investment targets.
